In today’s video I’m going to talk about how you can go about becoming that go to spokesperson for your industry on TV. Now you might be asking is this possible? And I am here to tell you it is.
We get this happening for so many of our clients through our tried and tested formula. Now the first thing to understand is that you can’t go from have them never having heard of you to you being given a regular spot on their TV program. That would be a bit like swiping right on Tinder and ending up married and kids skipping all the steps in between. It just wouldn’t happen and you probably wouldn’t want it to happen. Disaster would strike.
So the way to go about it is identify the TV outlet you want to be on and what their audience is interested in. Then go to a producer with content that will add value to and engage their audience. Make sure you do your follow up and score that first TV interview. Before the interview, really think about what are your key messages what are you trying to express and what should you be communicating during this interview. Go and give a fantastic interview and be what the media call really good media talent. Good media talent are people who can talk eloquently and to the point and communicate their messages clearly. If you do that and the audience does in fact engage with you, there’s a good chance you’ll be invited back. So after your first successful TV interview connect with the producers on LinkedIn and stay in touch.
Don’t harass them but comment on their posts, like and share their posts and support them. And every now and then not too often but if there’s something really relevant that you think they should know about feel free to share it with them. If you see something trending in the media that you can react to and add value to for their audience, get back in touch with the producer with your opinion and the fact that you’re available for an interview. Go back on TV give another great interview.
Be respectful to the crew and everyone around. Take that producer out for a coffee and learn about what they look for in a story and how you can help them. This is how you develop great relationships with TV producers or any member of the media for that matter. Essentially, the other thing to keep top of mind is that you need to make media a priority. We all get busy in our day to day business and world but you need to have a media mindset if you want to be that expert spokesperson on a regular basis on TV or any other media outlet for that matter.
Now we have had many of our clients become these regular spokespeople on TV and it doesn’t happen overnight. These are long term relationships that are formed usually over the period of a year but their persistence and their patience definitely pays off when some of them are now on TV every two to three weeks. Their business is booming and their profile is sky high.
